45 RPM HEAVEN Middle of the Road "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" Middle of the Road was a pop group that came out of Scotland, but recorded in Italy for awhile. They had an Abba-like sound with a heavier punch and predated the more famous group by few years. Middle of the Road did not achieve huge chart success in the United States. They did however make a big impact in the European market for many years. Until recently I knew of only two "hit" singles by Middle of the Road, neither of which charted very high on the mainland U.S. Despite that fact, Middle of the Road garnered a huge local hit in Hawaii. "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" was a big hit on several radio stations in the state during 1971, topping the charts on the islands of Maui and Hawaii. The song received heavy airplay in Honolulu after it became popular on Maui. Middle of the Road's version was so successful locally, that it eclipsed the Mac & Katie Kissoon version. "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" was followed up with another single called "Soley Soley" in early 1972. It turned out to be the band's last hit in Hawaii. After doing some research on the web I did find more information about Middle of the Road. They recorded for many years and enjoyed success on the European market with several other hits. Today lead singer Sally Carr still tours with a new band called Middle of the Road. CD AVAILABILITY: Middle of the Road's music is available on CD. "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" appears on several compilations issued by the band. There are also dance remixes available of the track. Visit Amazon.com and do a search for the band or the song.
