May 6, 2006 | Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii Thousands of Hawaii's military troops joined in a celebration of patriotism in one of the largest parades of its kind seen in Hawaii since the early 1990s. Soldiers from all branches of the armed services marched or drove down Kalakaua Ave. to the cheers of thousands of spectators who lined the road all the way from Fort DeRussy to Kapiolani Park. The successful parade and concert event that followed was sponsored by the United Service Organizations (USO) and a host of local firms. The parade also featured Veteran soldiers of World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the first Gulf War. As the troops, veterans and marching bands travelled down the avenue, a flyover of helicopters broke through the late morning air to heighten the sense of unity by all those who were in attendance. The concert event that followed featured local favorites Makaha Sons of Niihau and Grammy winning R & B artist John Legend.
